Invisalign: Your questions answered

For many people, Orthodontics is considered a teenage right of passage. However, it’s never too late to achieve a perfect, straight smile.

One aspect that puts some people off orthodontic treatment later in life is the prospect of a ‘mouth full of metal’ or other physical indicators that they are having ‘work done’.

However, orthodontic treatments have come a long way in the past few years and there’s now a number of options that offer exceptional results without impacting your smile along the way. One of the most popular of these are Invisalign braces, which offers a nearly invisible way to straighten your teeth. It uses a series of plastic trays (called aligners), custom made to fit your teeth, to move your teeth little by little into your desired position.

How does it work?

Invisalign uses advanced 3D computer-imaging technology to map out a personalised treatment plan for your teeth. This dictates the steps that will be needed to move your teeth from their existing position into a straight, dazzling smile.

To complete treatment, you will need to wear a series of clear ‘aligners’. Each of these are tailor made for you and are designed to move your teeth in small increments. Each aligner is worn for approximately a couple of weeks before it is switched into the next in the series. Over time, this will slowly move your teeth into the desired position.

How long does Invisalign take?

Invisalign treatment time will vary depending on your needs but it typically takes 6 to 18 months. However, treatment times tend to be shorter than with traditional braces.

How will treatment impact my day-to-day life?

For the treatment to be effective, you will need to wear your retainers for a recommended 22 hours a day, except for when you are eating, brushing or flossing your teeth. It is also recommended that you brush after every meal to maintain good oral hygiene.

On the upside, since Invisalign is removable, you will be able to eat and drink whatever you like during treatment. However, dentists advise that you only drink water while wearing your aligners to avoid risk of staining or damaging the trays.

Will Invisalign effect my speech?

Some people may find that they will gain a small lisp for the first few days they wear a tray. However, after this adjustment period, most people find that wearing an aligner has no impact on their speech.

How often will I have to see the dentist while on a treatment plan?

You will need to visit your orthodontist every 6 to 8 weeks to receive new aligners in your treatment plan. During these check ups, your orthodontist will check that your treatment is progressing as expected.

Is Invisalign painful?

Some patients report temporary discomfort for a few days after inserting a new tray in the series, which can be combatted with over-the-counter painkillers. Discomfort typically goes away within a couple of days.

Some patients find that their aligners rub their gums. Any patients who experience this are advised to talk to their dentist, who will be able to file down any problem areas on the aligner.

Once Invisalign is complete, will I need any further treatment?

Invisalign will straighten your smile without the need for subsequent orthodontic treatment. However, to maintain your smile you will need to wear a retainer for the rest of your life. For the first 6 months, this will need to be worn for at least 22 hours, but once your dentist is happy, you will only need to wear them overnight.

Is Invisalign suitable for me?

Whether Invisalign is suitable for you depends on a variety of factors. If you have a severe case of gapped or overcrowded teeth, overbite or underbite, alternative treatments may be required. Visit your dentist to find out whether Invisalign would work for you.

All candidates who opt for Invisalign treatment need to ensure they are prepared to strictly wear the aligner for 22 hours a day, to move on to the next aligner when scheduled and to ensure they maintain the advised oral health routine.

How much does it cost?

Invisalign costs vary and the cost of your treatment will be determined by the length of your treatment and complexity of your case. City Bridge Dental offers a variety of finance options to help pay for treatment.
