What is clear aligner treatment?

Clear aligners are a modern way to straighten teeth using a series of clear, removable aligners that are custom-made for your smile. Each aligner is worn for a set period before being replaced with the next one in the series, gradually moving your teeth into their planned position.

Unlike fixed braces, there are no wires or brackets to adjust. Instead, tooth movement is achieved by changing to a new aligner at regular intervals, as planned by your dentists?

How long will I need to wear my clear aligners?

The length of clear aligner treatment varies from person to person and depends on the complexity of your case. Some people may only need a small number of aligners for minor adjustments, while others may need more to achieve their desired result.

Your dentist will carefully plan your treatment at the start, including:

  • How many aligners you’ll need
  • How often you’ll change them (usually every one to two weeks)
  • The estimated length of your treatment

For the best results, aligners should be worn for around 22 hours a day, only being removed to eat, drink anything other than water, and to clean your teeth.

Is teeth whitening detrimental to your health?

Teeth naturally change colour over time, and everyday factors such as food and drink can contribute to staining. Common causes include coffee, red wine, spices, dark berries and certain sauces.

When carried out under the supervision of a qualified dental professional, teeth whitening is considered safe. Before starting any whitening treatment, your dentist will assess your teeth and gums to make sure it’s suitable for you and talk through your options.

Whitening should always be dentist-supervised to ensure it is both safe and effective.
